Poor air quality caused bycentral Washington wildfires last fall delayed the annual Yakima RiverCleanup. The 40th annual event has now been rescheduled for April 27. One of Central Washington University’s longest community-involvementefforts the annual cleanup is sponsored by CWU’s Center forLeadership and Community Engagement. This year’s change will be thefirst in what will now become an annual spring event.The change in dates is also allowing for new partnerships includingwith the City of Ellensburg Kittitas County Solid Waste KittitasEnvironmental Education Network and Bureau of Land Management whichwill offer opportunities for trail maintenance and campsite renovation.About 200 students and community members are expected to participate inthis year’s cleanup. Volunteer check-in begins Saturday at 8:00 a.m.on the Student Union and Recreation Center east patio. Participants willbe provided with a free “Breakfast of Champions” before heading outto their cleanup locations. A free pizza lunch for volunteers will beavailable upon their return. In addition this year’s event is taking place in conjunction withthe Downtown Ellensburg Cleanup.
