CWU Celebrates Pride Week: Political Aesthetics of Drag lecture by Shaka McGlotten

May 27, 2015 @ 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Drag is the act of wearing a clothing or style from a gender other than your own. Drag has been a part of American culture for a long time and the cultural influence it spawned has spread across the world. To talk about the impact of drag, Dr. Shaka McGlotten will present his lecture “Political Aesthetics of Drag” Wednesday, May 27 at 3 p.m. in Black Hall 151. The lecture is free to attend and open to the public.

The Political Aesthetics of Drag is part of a larger project about artists and activists who use drag in their work. Dr. McGlotten argues that their drag personas and performances can provide unique vantage points from which to consider our shared political present.

Dr. McGlotten teaches Anthropology at SUNY Purchase and is also engaged in art making and queer science fiction concerned with the ways techno science impacts and is impacted by queers and people of color. Most of his research and writing is grounded in ethnography and deals with some configuration of issues related to media, technology, gender, sexuality and race. He is currently working on two projects: one that brings black queer studies together with network cultures and theories, the other about contemporary drag.
