CWU College Civics Week May 4-7 informs voters, encourages civic duty

(Ellensburg, WA – April 24, 2015) To help the CWU and local communities become active citizens and educated voters, the Center for Leadership and Community Engagement (CLCE) is set to host College Civics Week with events Monday, May 4 through Thursday,
May 7. All events are free and open to the public. With forums, debates and keynote speeches by Washington State Representatives Melanie Stambaugh and Hans Zeiger, getting involved in the week’s activities is a must for everyone. The theme this year is bi-partisanship,
and everyone is encouraged to mingle with those from different backgrounds who hold differing viewpoints.

College Civics Week is an annual program at CWU and always features an impressive list of events meant to encapsulate civic duty that encourages community involvement and this year is no different.

College Civics Week Schedule of Events:

Monday, May 4
Showcase Display
10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC) 137 A/B

Community Organization Fair
11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
SURC 137 A/B
Roam, interact and ask questions about how to get more involved in the community.
Organizations present include the League of Women Voters, Habitat for Humanity, Yakima Humane Society, Adult Activity Center, Youth Services and the Wellness Center.

ASCWU-Student Government Election Debate
6 – 8 p.m.
SURC Pit
The Associated Students of Central Washington University (ASCWU) Student Government 2015-2016 candidates will be debating before the General Elections open that night.

Keynote Speaker: Representative Melanie Stambaugh from 25th Legislative District
Noon – 1 p.m.
SURC Pit
Rep. Stambaugh was elected into office as a Member of the Washington House of Representatives from the 25th district in January of this year. She became the youngest woman elected to the Washington State Legislature since 1936, and is currently the youngest
member of the legislative chamber.
A question period will follow the speech at 12:45 p.m.

Photo booth, snacks and mingle
1 – 2 p.m.

Enjoy snacks, take photos and mingle with Rep. Stambaugh following her speech. Have questions ready for an engaging experience.

Wednesday, May 6

Keynote Speaker: Representative Hans Zeiger from 25th Legislative District
Noon – 1 p.m.

Rep. Zeiger was elected into office as a Member of the Washington House of Representatives from the 25th district in 2010. A Puyallup, Wash. native and accomplished author, Zeiger has an impressive resumé of books published including “Get Off My Honor:
The Assault on the Boy Scouts of America” and “Reagan’s Children: taking Back the City on the Hill.” In 2013, he was commissioned as an officer in the Washington State Air National Guard.
A question period will follow the speech at 12:45 p.m.

Preliminary results will be posted by 11:59 p.m.
