Having a downtown association is important to the success of local businesses and the community as a whole. The
mission of the Cle Elum Downtown Association is to Preserve, Promote and Enhance Cle Elum’s Historic Downtown and
to create partnerships the stimulate economic activity and action for renewed sense of pride and community.
By joining forces with the Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce, both organizations will have resources available for
businesses, community events and future planning.
“In the past 4 years, I have grown to understand the roots of Cle Elum as a community and I cannot wait to put
strategies to work in 2017. We have such a great opportunity to refresh the way we communicate, support, and
celebrate with each other.” Says Amy McGuffin, Director of Tourism for the Chamber and new Executive Director of the
Cle Elum Downtown Association. “Our board has the renewed enthusiasm to put the mission of the organization to
work. I am excited to see what they can do, but they cannot do it alone, I am hoping that more community members
join and help us in the next year. To start, please come to our open house and find out what we are up to.”
The board members are committed to helping put Cle Elum back on the map. Together they are restructuring the Cle
Elum Downtown Association. The Board members are as follows: Ben Goldie, President; Jeff Schafer, Vice President;
Elisia Schafer, Secretary; Terry Terry, Treasurer; and Jay McGowan, Marc Kirkpatrick, Tara Dolan. As well as Amy
McGuffin, Executive Director.
“There are immediate financial benefits in your business taxes that make this program a success. The longer, more
important, benefits are the overall changes that occur to our main street and surrounding areas.” Says Jeff Schafer, Vice
President of the Cle Elum Downtown Association. “Having a thriving financial downtown is a benefit to everyone in our
community. This will happen through Main Street.”
The Main Street Program is another great opportunity for local businesses. This program has four main points that will
help the businesses involved and therefore help the community as a whole.
• Organization- everyone needs to work together to renew the downtown and good organization provides
stability for long term success.
• Promotion- provides excitement and vibrancy downtown and encourages customer traffic.
• Design- enhances the look and feel of the commercial district and improves the physical image of downtown.
• Economic Restructuring- develops long -term solutions for merchants.
To share the changes that have been made with the community, the association is holding a holiday Jingle and Mingle
open house on December 20th from 3pm- 6pm. It will be located at the chambers new building, Catalyst 214 N
Pennsylvania Ave in Cle Elum.
“The Jingle Mingle is a great opportunity for many businesses to contribute to the revitalization of the Cle Elum
Downtown and support the Cle Elum Downtown Association.” Says Marc Kirkpatrick, board member of the Cle Elum
Downtown Association. “As a local business owner, I always hope and wish that the taxes we pay can benefit the
community directly. This is a great opportunity to make that happen with real dollars making a real difference. There is a
lot of competition for tax dollars in our State and the Washington State Main Street Tax Credit program is our first effort
