The third of the niyamas (personal observances) from Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, tapas has been variously translated into English as heat, spiritual austerities, fiery discipline and internal fire. Through the practice we will evoke a burning flame, our inner fire, by which the obstacles to achieve our goals will be incinerated. “A worthy aim makes life illumined, pure and divine. Without such an aim, action and prayer have no value. Life without tapas is like a heart without love.” – BKS Iyeangar. We will flow through variations of sun salutations, twists and some sneaky core work to get our heart pumping and inner heat going. Then, relengthen our major muscle groups. Finish feeling balanced, revitalized while burning nicely from within.
